Environment Design Rocks – Week 01

Here is my submission for an online course, Environment Design Rocks, taught by Amit Dutta. There is also a thread for the class on the Crimson Daggers forum. And I also made a post about this class last week, check it out! Anyhow, the assignment for this week was to do 5 notan studies using only 2 values (black and white), 5 more using 3-4 value studies, and 100 notan sketches using 2 values. I rushed to finish this weeks assignment. This exercise was definitely challenging! The two value studies were a lot more challenging than I thought they would be. When you are only using two values, it can be tough deciding what details to include and omit. Also, I spent too much time on my notan sketches. Espically up to 60/100. After that I decided to go more abstract and focus in on just design. The last 40 were done a lot quicker. To sum it up, I really enjoyed this exercise and found it to be extremely helpful! From now on I will use the notan exercise as my go-to for warming up.
